This year alone so far there were 600 mass shootings and 40,000 deaths from gun violence in the US, according to a statement issued by President Joe Biden on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON, Dec 7: Four people were killed and one man was critically injured in a mass shooting in the University of Nevada in Las Vegas at noon Wednesday (1:30 am Thursday IST) while on Tuesday in Austin and San Antonio, Texas, at least six people were shot dead. The dead at Las Vegas included the shooter.

In Las Vegas, four other people were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment of panic attacks and a pair of police officers suffered minor injuries.

The suspect is believed to be a 67-year-old college professor, Anthony Polito, and the motive is not known. He had sought a job at the university. He was shot by the police who arrived on the scene in minutes. Police evacuated the buildings.

Eyewitnesses said the firing began on the fourth floor at the Beam Hall. Classes were going on on the second floor. Seconds later shots were also heard at the Students Union building. Just as firing started, alarm blared through the building. Teachers locked the doors and told their students to get on the ground. Some teachers checked outside and asked their students to run as fast as they could. And they all ran as fast as possible, one student said. The university enrolls 25,000 students.

“I just did what everybody else did, just tried to hide to safety,” an eyewitness told NBC News. People were running, crying and calling their parents.

Normalcy returned late in the evening and the students returned to the campus in the night. The police deployed a strong presence on the campus.

The Las Vegas Strip recorded US' deadliest mass shooting ever involving single assailant in 2017 when 60 people were killed by a single gunman positioned in a hotel and rained bullets from a window on a huge crowd at a music festival down on the Strip.

A suspect, identified as 34-year-old Shane James, is in custody. Shane James was a convict, served in the jail and had mental health issues. James was an ex-military man. Two of the victims were found dead in their San Antonio home, thought to be the suspect's parents (Phyllis James, 55, and Shane James Sr., 56). Tuesday's incidents spanned about 8 hours. In Austin four people were shot at different times during the day.

Of late shooting has become a daily occurrence in the US and schoolchildren are the usual victims, yet nothing has been done about it so far. There were 800 mass shootings this year alone and 40,000 deaths due to gun violence.

• Experts blame violation of the Visual Flying Rules (VFR) for most of the chopper crashes in the mountains as the leading cause. • Simply put, everyone knows flying in the hills during the monsoon is risky, but the companies want to make more money in any which case. This type of tragedy is very frequently invited in the Indian hill State of Uttarakhand as well, where pilots are even made to fly without the mandatory rest.
