All liquor shops re-opened in Mumbai closed again as customers violate social distancing

MUMBAI, May 8: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has shut all liquor shops in the city with effect from Wednesday as the customers were violating the social distancing guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs to prevent spread of coronavirus (covid) epidemic.

The shops had opened on Monday with the relaxation of restrictions on shops and small business activities. The relaxation was conditional that the curbs may be reimposed if the situation slides back into what it was earlier.

From April 20, single shops were allowed to open, small businesses allowed to function and agricultural operations to resume throughout the country by the MHA. Later, trains were run as an exception to allow migrants, students and tourists stranded in different States to return to their home-States under certain regulations.

The lockdown which ended on May 3 was further extended by two weeks but with a new set of area-wise restrictions. The districts were to be classified as green, orange and red depending on the number of cases and casualties so that at least in some areas the business activities could resume in order to revive the economy. The focus of the Government shifted to saving lives and also livelihoods.
