PATNA, June 30: Another bridge has collapsed in Bihar. This is the fifth bridge to crash in just 11 days. Not that bridges had not collapsed earlier in Bihar. It did but not with such frequency. What does it indicate?

The latest incident was in Madhepur block in Madhubani district on Friday. The 77-metre bridge being built over Bhutahi river to connect to Supaul crashed. One of the pillars gave way as the river got flooded due to torrential rains in the bordering catchment areas of Nepal. The work had started three years ago, costing Rs 3 cr.

The four-pillar bridge was being constructed by the rural development department under the Prime Minister's Rural Road Scheme.

On Thursday, a 70-metre-long 12-metre-wide bridge in Bahadurganj in the Kishanganj district had collapsed.

An under-construction bridge collapsed in Bihar's Motihari in East Champaran district last Sunday, the third in a week.

The 16-metre-long bridge was being built over a canal costing Rs 1.5 cr by the State Government's Rural Works Department (RWD). The cause is not yet known. A departmental inquiry has been ordered.

The bridge was meant to connect Amwa village to other areas in Ghorashan block.

A small bridge in Siwan district's Mairwan, and another under-construction bridge in Araria also collapsed in the previous few days.

The collapse of the newly-constructed bridge in Siwan over the Gandak canal occurred on previous Saturday with a loud thud that was heard even in the neighbouring Ramgarh in Darbhanga district. The bridge connected Patedhi Bazar in Maharajganj district with Ramgarh panchayat in Darbhanga.

The 180 metres long bridge over the Bakra river in Araria, built at a cost of Rs 12 cr collapsed on Tuesday earlier.

Bridge collapse is a common incident in Bihar, indicating the level of corruption prevalent in the backward State.

Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi, a former Chief Minister of Bihar, said the recent bridge collapses in the State are the handiwork of the Opposition to tarnish the image of the Government. But in the same breath he said poor-quality materials might have been used by contractors.
