Chinese vaccine tests successful on monkeys; PiCoVacc was developed by Sinovac Biotech of Beijing

PiCoVacc was administered by injection to Indian origin rhesus macaques which created antibodies that had the ability to denature live corona cells.

NEW DELHI, May10: A Chinese vaccine for coronavirus is reported to have shown remarkable success in trial on monkeys.

The inactivated corona vaccine named PiCoVacc was administered by injection to one of two groups of Indian origin rhesus macaques selected for the trial while the other was kept free of the vaccine.

Both the groups were exposed to SARS-CoV-2 virus. After three weeks it was found that the immunised monkeys created antibodies that could attack normal virus. The monkeys which were not given the vaccine developed pneumonia.

PiCoVacc was developed by Sinovac Biotech of Beijing.

There are also unconfirmed reports that China had developed an effective vaccine as early as March.
