Apex court favours home delivery of liquor

NEW DELHI, May 11: In view of the inability of State Governments to maintain social distancing at liquor shops, the Supreme Court has suggested that home delivery of liquor may be tried. The apex court, however, said that it is not issuing any order to that effect.

"We will not pass any order but States should consider home delivery or indirect sale of liquor to maintain social distancing," the Supreme Court said on Friday.

The court declined to entertain a PIL seeking ban on sale of liquor at shops during the lockdown period. Liquor shops had been closed nationwide since March 25 as part of the lockdown and were allowed to re-open last week during the relaxation of the restrictions last Monday.

Justices Ashok Bhushan, Sanjay Kishan Kaul and BR Gavai heard the case via video-conferencing, following the social distancing norm in force to prevent coronavirus spread.
