Mumbai hospitals present agonising scenes of corona patients breathless without support

In many hospitals there isn't enough space and the coronavirus patients gasping for breath are bundled together, sharing life supporting facilities, even as new patients pour in. Last week, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane had tweeted, "In Sion hospital, patients are sleeping next to dead bodies!!! This is the extreme...what kind of administration is this! Very very shameful!!" Later, Rane also tweeted a video showing body bags lying next to patients in a ward in Mumbai’s KEM hospital.

MUMBAI, May 16: It is a pathetic sight in Mumbai hospitals where coronavirus-stricken patients gasping for breath are sitting on the floor or sharing cots even as a stream of new patients is flowing in. The municipal corporation is unable to cope up with the situation. It is facing an acute shortage of beds and facilities and essential medical staff as an overwhelming number of patients are streaming into the hospitals.

Moving visuals of harrowing conditions in hospitals like Sion hospital, KEM Parel and others have started appearing in the media. The civic body has at its disposal just 500 ICUs and 3,000 beds assisted with oxyden supply. Coronavirus obstructs breathing and subsequently oxygen supply to vital organs like heart and brain.

One calculation anticipates requirement for 24,000 beds, a large number of ventilators and oxygen supports in the next 10 days, based on the premise that 5% of confirmed cases need hospitalisation. There are 3,800 beds in 38 covid centres.

In view of the mess created on the health front, there has been an administrative shuffle, replacing the Commissioner and two Additional Commissioners. Iqbal Singh Chahal is the new Commissioner, who, soon after taking over the charge last Saturday, began inspection of the health facilities.

Last week, BJP MLA Nitesh Rane had posted a video of Sion hospital showing seven bodies in a ward. His Twitter post read: "In Sion hospital, patients are sleeping next to dead bodies!!! This is the extreme...what kind of administration is this! Very very shameful!!" Later, Rane also tweeted a video showing body bags lying next to patients in a ward in Mumbai’s KEM hospital.
