24 migrants killed in truck collision in UP

While lakhs of migrants are returning home from various parts of the country because of the coronavirus lockdown, several road accidents are taking place claiming many lives. Accidents have taken place in Maharashtra, MP and UP.

LUCKNOW, May 16: Twenty four migrants were killed and several injured when two trucks collided in UP's Auraiya, 200 km from Lucknow, on Friday night.

The migrants were returning to Bihar, UP, Jharkhand and Bengal from Delhi and Rajasthan. The accident occurred when one truck stopped near a dhaba.

"The road accident in Uttar Pradesh's Auraiya is extremely tragic. The government is involved in the relief work. I express my condolences to the families of those killed in this accident, as well as wish the injured a speedy recovery," Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted. He announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the families of those who died and Rs 50,000 for those who were injured.

Another accident had occurred in Sagar in MP in the morning killing 10 migrants. Earlier, 15 migrants who were sleeping on rail tracks were run over by a goods train in Maharashtra. The migrants from various parts are returning to their home States as they were rendered jobless by the coronavirus lockdown.

Even though the State Governments have arranged hundreds of trains and buses, several of migrants undertake their long journey on foot while some go for hitchhiking on trucks and other vehicles. The migrants like others have lost jobs and penniless.
