Two survive Karachi air crash: Toll 100

Over hundred people perished in the Pak air crash on Friday. One of the two survivors is Zafar Masud, CEO of Pakistan's Bank of Punjab. He suffered a fracture of the hip bone. India's PM Modi has mourned the loss of lives.

ISLAMABAD, May 23: There are two survivors in the Pakistani air crash. The Pakistan International Airlines plane, Airbus A 320, carrying about 100 passengers and crew crashed near the Jinnah International Airport on Friday morning. The flight, PK-8303, from Lahore was about to land at the Karachi airport when it crashed into a residential area.

The two survivors are being treated at the hospitals in Karachi. One of the two survivors is Zafar Masud, CEO of Pakistan's Bank of Punjab. He suffered a fracture of the hip bone. The other was one Zubair. Pilot Captain Sajjad Gul's last words to the traffic control tower were: We have lost engine." The plane which was on fire hit a telecom tower and rooftops before crashing onto parked vehicles in the congested locality. About 30 people on the ground were injured.

The Airbus had a capacity of 180 but due to social distancing necessitated by coronavirus, there were fewer passengers. The exact number of passengers on board could not be confirmed. The domestic flights had resumed last week after two months of coronavirus lockdown

. Health ministry spokeswoman Meeran Yousuf told Al Jazeera that 60 bodies are kept at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi's largest Government hospital, and 32 at Civil Hospital Karachi, another leading State-run hospital.

Mourning the loss of lives in the air crash, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Deeply saddened by the loss of life due to a plane crash in Pakistan. Our condolences to the families of the deceased, and wishing speeedy recovery to those injured."
