Students allowed to pursue two degree courses simultaneously

After a decade of research by committees and councils and lots of public money spent, the UGC has now decided that a student may study more!

NEW DELHI, May 23: In a reform that may signal basic structural changes in due course, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved a proposal to allow students to pursue two degree courses at the same time if they wish to.

However, one of the studies has to be in the regular degree programme while the other may be in open/distance learning mode or online. The two degrees can be in different streams and different institutions also.

OPINION: At least in the last ten years we have seen several committees and councils being engaged to study and recommend if students can be allowed to pursue two courses at the same time. One of the findings was that a student technically cannot pursue two regular courses! Do we need committees and councils and several years and lots of public money to know that a student cannot attend two full-time courses at the same time until Quantum P comes! Finally it was proposed that a second course can be in open mode or online. In the first place, do we need these Macaulay degrees even after 73 years of their departure, wasting much of people's money leading to widespread deprivation. The answer is yes because we have more educational offices than schools in the country. Just another instance of why we don't make progress while even small countries are doing well, is: They don't prohibit their people from pursuing education or taking up any jobs as they like, by introducing age bar and other limitations.
