Spanish PM dreams of a booming summer tourism

MADRID, May 24: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Saturday that tourists would be welcome to the country from July. He told his weekly press meet that the country will open its doors to overseas tourists under certain "safety conditions." He did not say when and what would be conditions to be met.

Tourism is a major source of revenue for the country. He invited “all tourist establishments, bars and restaurants, and beach and inland destinations to start getting ready from today to restart their activity in the coming days.” There is a plan afoot to create safe tourist corridors and tourist-friendly conditions and travel protocols so that the guests are not deterred. The announcement energised the tourism sector.

Spain was till recently the epicentre of coronavirus epidemic, taking Italy's place. The total cases so far is 2,82,370 and the deaths 28,628. A wek ago the figures were total cases 276,505 and total deaths 27,563.

For sections of tourists, Spain is world's No 2 destination. With its golden beaches, party islands, rich culture and history - 80 million foreigners visit each year, according to Forbes. Spain makes 12% of its revenue from tourism.
