14.75 lakh migrant returnees in UP looking to Govt for jobs, livelihood

The sudden, massive reverse migration has put the home States at their wits' end, grappling with an enormous problem of finding them jobs to avert large-scale starvation deaths. So far 3,500 Shramik Special trains have already ferried 48 lakh migrant workers to their home States, mostly UP and Bihar, in less than a month. And another 36 lakh are on their way back home.

NEW DELHI, May 27: The UP Government has launched a plan to provide employment to the migrants who have returned from various States after losing jobs there following the coronavirus lockdown. According to official sources, 14.75 lakh such migrants have registered themselves to avail of the opportunities being offered by the Government.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said earlier that the Government was engaged in skill mapping of the migrant returnees. He also said the Government was thinking of making necessary rules to ensure the States employing migrant workers provided them security cover like insurance as well as basic living facilities.

According to the Railway Ministry, 3,500 Shramik Special trains have been run till today and 48 lakh migrants have been ferried to their home States. Eighty per cent of these migrants belonged to UP and Bihar, Government sources said. Most of these workers were engaged in Maharashtra, Punjab and Gujarat. Delhi had ferried out 2.4 lakh migrant workers.

The Railways said 2,600 more Shramik Specials will be run within the next ten days to transport 36 lakh more workers.
