Airports functioning smoothly, claims Puri

The night before the domestic flights were to resume, several flights were cancelled due to objections from several Sates.

NEW DELHI, May 27: The resumed domestic flight service is completing three days today, Wednesday. The airlines conducted 445 flights yesterday, the second day, ferrying 62,641 passengers, Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said. He claimed that all the airports were functioning smoothly, except those in Bengal, which has been battered by a cyclone.

On Monday, the first day the flights resumed, only 428 flights could be run as several flights had to be cancelled on Sunday night when States like Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Bengal raised objections on the ground that the corona epidemic is still raging all over the country. Finally, the number of flights were drastically curtailed overnight to take those States on board. Therefore, the cancellations put the passengers to hardships. Puri said 630 flights stand cancelled since Monday.

Meanwhile, cab aggregator Uber laid off 600 employees as the company went out of business because of coronavirus lockdown. The lay-offs account for about a quarter of the staff strength in India. Earlier, Ola too had resorted to lay-off.
