NEW DELHI, May 29: The coronavirus-infected 188 countries globally have reported
till date a total of 57,22,054 cases, including 3,56,268 deaths. Out of the
total cases, 29,91,690 are active while 23,74,096 patients had recovered. In
India, the total cases came to 1,65,799, including 4,706 deaths. Those recovered
were 71,106 and those still in isolation or treatment were 89,987.
In India, the worst affected State continues to be Maharashtra, where even
policemen in hundreds are losing the battle to the ferocious coronavirus. Its
headquarter, Mumbai, one of the world's unmanageable, congested and dense cities, has become India's epicentre for corona like New York to the US.
Maharashtra, standing quite apart from all other States, reported 59,546 cases
and 1,982 deaths while Gujarat reported 15,562 cases and 960 deaths, Delhi 16,281
cases and 316 deaths, Tamil Nadu 19,372 cases and 145 deaths, Maharashtra accounting
for almost half of the total Indian casualties and Mumbai producing more than
half of the cases in Maharashtra.
In the last 24 hours, a total of 1,438 people tested positive for coronavirus
in Mumbai alone, taking the total number of cases in the city to 35,273, and
38 new deaths take the casualty tally to 1,135, which is also more than half
of the State's casualty figure.
