Former C'garh CM Ajit Jogi passes away

A former bureaucrat, Ajit Jogi became the first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh when the State was formed in 2000. Later he left the Congress to form his own party.

RAIPUR, May 29: Former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Ajit Jogi died of cardiac arrest in a hospital here on Friday. He was 74. He was admitted to the hospital on May 9 and had been in comatose.

A former bureaucrat, he is survived by wife Renuka Jogi and son Amit Jogi. His daughter passed away in 2000. Jogi left the civil service in 1985, joined the Congress and became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1986. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha from Raigarh constituency in 1998.

Jogi was the first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh when the State was carved out of Madhya Pradesh on 1 November 2000 as the 26th State of the Indian Union. Later he left the Congress to form his own party, the Janata Congress Chhattisgarh.

Son Amit Jogi said the funeral will take place on Saturday at his native place in Gorela.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing grief, said, "Shri Ajit Jogi Ji was passionate about public service. This passion made him work hard as a bureaucrat and as a political leader. He strived to bring a positive change in the lives of the poor, especially tribal communities. Saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family. RIP."

Rahul Gandhi tweeted, "I’m sorry to hear about the passing of Shri Ajit Jogi, former Parliamentarian & Chhattisgarh’s first CM. My condolences to his family, friends & followers in this time of grief. May he rest in peace."

“The death of the first Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh Shri Ajit Jogi is a major political loss for the State of Chhattisgarh. He will live on in the memories of all the people of the state,” Chief minister Bhupesh Baghel said, announcing a three-day State mourning.
