Delta's Airbus hits severe turbulence over Wyoming, 25 passengers, crew injured

MINNEAPOLIS (Minnesota), Aug 2: Turbulence is worse than death! We are going to go down, but not really. At one point we thought we were going to die. Nothing like we ever felt before. This was insane. People and things were flying around, hitting the roof. Everything was up in the air, a passenger of the Delta flight DL56 told the media.

Airbus A330-900neo operating the Delta flight from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam diverted to Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport at around 7:25 pm local time Wednesday as it started facing an intense turbulence when it was only about Wyoming.

Twenty five passengers and crew were injured in the turmoil. They were taken to the hospital after a safe emergency landing in Minneapolis. There were 275 passengers and 13 crew on board.

The Airbus was 45 minutes into the flight. The plane bouncing over 1,000 feet in either direction. Drink carts were hitting the roof. There were three shots. So many people getting injured is rare, especially for a bigger plane.

The flight attendants have to move around and therefore they are not belted in. But majority of the injured were passengers, a passenger asked why. Either they were not wearing the seat belts or they were hit by the flying debris. The FAA and NTSB will investigate. Safety experts say the best thing you can do is fasten your belts.

The Airbus was typically cruising at 982 km/h when it experienced sudden altitude drop due to uncontrolled convective downdraft, 1,600 feet in 85 seconds, and violent updraft raising the angle of attack that throws up the jet, all in three consecutive waves caused by atmospheric instability aggravated by the Wyoming terrain.

After climbout and into cruising is often when jets are most vulnerable to unexpected weather pockets, and in the present case the Airbus was over the risky mountainous terrain of Wyoming that further twists the currents.

South US is specially said to be more vulnerable to air turbulence. According to Turbli, Salt Lake City ranked No. 4 in North America’s most turbulent airports. Denver, Bozeman and Albuquerque ranked higher.

But bigger planes are affected the less. Yet the widebody Airbus with a capacity of 281 flyers faced the very severe turbulence, injuring so many people, a rare incident.

Advisory: The incidence of turbulence is going to be more frequent, more scary, more dangerous and more intense with climate change. Otherwise serious injuries are rare. Climate change alters the jet stream. Wearing a seat belt is the most effective way, and the only way, to prevent injury and death. Use a seat belt during every trip, no matter how short.
