Coronavirus updates: India's efforts pay off, recovery rate goes up

Every cloud has a silver lining: Although the number of corona infections in the country is spiraling up, the high recovery rate is a reward for the hard work put in by the healthcare staff through the length and breadth of the country.

NEW DELHI, June 2: The Government has claimed that India's preventive measures were very fruitful and the recovery rate was high at 48.19%. The total number of cases till date stood at 1,98,706 while the recoveries were 95,527 although the daily rise in the cases for the last 24 hours jumped to 8,380.

The total deaths were 5,598 of which 73% were due to comorbities. For every two deaths one was of a senior citizen; senior citizens account for 10% of India's population.

In Capital Delhi, 13 more staff at the Lieutanant Governor's office tested positive for coronvirus on Tuesday. Last week one other employee had reported positive, apart from a few at the NDMC.

While Andhra Pradesh has sealed its borders, banning entry of passengers and vehicles, the worst-hit Maharashtra opens all shops and markets from June 5 and has lifted inter-State travel ban. Karnataka too has lifted the inter-State travel ban following the Centre's guidelines to unlock the lockdown in three phases starting June 8.

Smarting under the impact of lockdown necessitated by coronavirus epidemic, most of the businesses had shuttered the shops and laid off employees in large numbers unable to bear the burden of mounting losses. Latest to join this lot is Air Asia which has cut the pilots' salary by 40%.

However, the silver lining is that the factories are getting back to normal as fast as they can. Large automobile companies like BMW have resumed production.
