COMMENT: Zohran Mamdani’s signature agenda struck a chord with New York’s diverse electorate—an agenda crafted and presented flawless by the accomplished, multi-cultural youth. Whether free bus ride for all or public sector groceries! The pitch was flawless, down-to-earth and magnetic for a city bursting at its seams. But, remember, those were also the exotic ideologies that laid the foundations of India's historical disaster.

NEW YORK CITY, Nov 4: In a landmark victory for the so-called progressive politics, Democratic Assembly member Zohran Mamdani was on Tuesday elected Mayor of New York City, defeating independent candidate Andrew Cuomo (still a Democrat) and Republican Curtis Sliwa in one of the most closely watched municipal elections in decades.

The race saw record-breaking voter turnout, with approximately 1.75 million ballots cast across the five boroughs. Mamdani secured 50.2% of the vote (486,741 votes), followed by Cuomo with 40.8% (396,177 votes) and Sliwa trailing at 8.2% (79,281 votes).

The election was widely viewed as a referendum on the city’s future direction, pitting progressive ideals against moderate and conservative platforms.

Zohran Mamdani – A Democratic socialist and progressive champion:

The first Indian-Amercan and first Muslim to become Mayor of New York City, Mamdani at 34 is one of the youngest mayors in New York City's history. Born in Uganda to Indian Punjabi Hindu mother Mira Nair, a renowned Indian film maker, and Mahmood Mamdani, an Ugandan scholar of Indian Gujarati descent, he migrated to the US and rose to prominence as a Democratic Socialist and member of the New York State Assembly.

Mamdani was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2020 ( Assembly District 36 in Queens), representing Astoria and parts of Long Island City in Queens. He assumed office on January 1, 2021, succeeding Aravella Simota.

His campaign focused on universal child care, affordable housing, reducing costs for working-class New Yorkers and immigrant rights.

But what resonated strongly with the middle and low-income residents, students and the working class who rely on buses daily, was his pledge to make all New York City buses free to ride. State groceries was anothet catch.

He described the policy as a matter of “dignity, equity, and access”, arguing that public transportation should be a right, not a privilege.

As a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, his work in Queens built a strong grassroots base that helped propel his mayoral campaign.

Mamdani’s unapologetically leftist platform drew sharp criticism from President Donald Trump, who labeled him a “Communist” and threatened to cut federal funding to the city if Mamdani won.

Andrew Cuomo: Independent and former Governor Former Governor Cuomo, once a dominant figure in New York politics, and still officially a member of the Democratic party, ran as an independent after resigning as Governor in 2021 amid sexual misconduct allegations. His campaign emphasized experience, stability and economic recovery, positioning himself as a centrist alternative to Mamdani’s progressive agenda. Despite endorsements from high-profile figures including even President Trump, Cuomo was unable to overcome the shadow of his resignation and the energized progressive base rallying behind Mamdani.

Curtis Sliwa: Republican and Guardian Angels Founder Curtis Sliwa, a longtime radio personality and founder of the Guardian Angels, represented the Republican ticket. His platform centred on public safety, crime reduction and restoring “law and order” to the city. However, Sliwa struggled to gain traction in a predominantly Democratic electorate and finished a distant third.

Political implications

Mamdani’s victory signals a shift in New York City’s political landscape, with voters embracing a more progressive vision amid national polarization. His win also sets the stage for potential clashes with Federal leadership, especially given President Trump’s vocal opposition.

As Mamdani prepares to take office, all eyes will be on how he navigates governance without administratubve experience, coalition-building and the implementation of his ambitious agenda.

PROGNOSIS: It looks a Real New Trump is emerging - courageous, balanced, powerful and disinterested. Determined to save his country from the cliff, he has done quite a few draconian things that will reduce the burden of debts of the Federal entity, like the golden handshake, stopping senseless funding, pulling out of a worthless WHO. Shutting the Education Department is another. On the other hand, running it is also not the Centre's job either (We will convincingly elaborate it in the next chapter).

In India the scene is just the opposite. Centralisation is the core agenda and identity of the ruling dispensation without which it has no existence, or in other words, it exists for that set of schemes only. A realisation of this never dawned upon any Opposition party in 2014 or any time thereafter, what to talk of being able to see it coming 70 years ago! The consequence of all this violation of basic natural law of the universe we cannot predict.

THE AMERICAN CONUNDRUM: Political venom has migrated to top echelons in the US. It was reported last year NASA has become politicised, vitiated. But NASA refuted the charge. How Boeing developed a glitch but its unmanned return was smooth. When Suni-Wilmore were stranded last June, why the return was set for February? Because that comes only after January 20! SpaceX called the shots, for itself and for Trump. Then the mission was manipulated for March for a better bargain! In between, what made Elon Musk 'predict' during campaign if Kamala Harris wins he would be in jail. In politics, it is said, "the only rule is there are no rules." Difficult times for Americans too.

The terminations are part of a large-scale exercise going on all across Fed departments and organisations to reduce wasteful Government expenditure as decided by a Trump in a mess gone berserk, and improve administrative efficiency following the whims of billionaire and his associate Elon MusK and his DOGE. It has not been shared how terminations are going to raise the efficiency bar! It looks like Trump has stolen some of the prescriptions meant for India. But the American problems are quite different.

ANALYSIS: "The standard operating procedure for deportations by aircraft used by ICE that is effective from 2012 provides for the use of restraints," says the Government. That means, it is taken for granted the US will set the standard for deportations.
