Ministry works out strategy for theoretical management of coronavirus epidemic

The Ministry of Health has formulated a new strategy for the detection and management of coronavirus (covid) in areas where the infection is surging.

NEW DELHI, June 8: Union Health Secretary Preeti Sudan has asked the Municipal Commissioners of 45 civic bodies in the country, located in 38 districts in 10 States, which are seeing a surge in corona cases, and the concerned District Collectors, Medical Officers, Superintendents of District Hospitals and the principals of the medical colleges to pay attention to house-to-house surveys, sample testing and surveillance in the urban municipal areas to check the coronavirus epidemic spreading asymptamatically.

She told the officials through a video conference on Monday that a district-centric planning for health infrastructure, isolation of suspects and contacts, quick transfer of and provision for medical aid for symptomatic patients and bed availability management should be made urgently to combat the virus and save lives.

The 38 districts fall in the 10 States of Maharashtra, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Haryana, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh.

The conference discussed the widespread infection in densely populated urban areas, with areas that shared public amenities; importance of house-to-house surveys; prompt testing followed by prompt isolation and clinical management of cases and containment strategy to be implemented.

A statement from the Ministry said, the officials were briefed on measures to be taken like prioritising the high-risk and vulnerable segments like elderly people and people with co-morbidities while contact-tracing to prevent deaths; active surveillance measures, adequate testing and promoting health seeking behaviour for timely detection of cases; ensuring timely shifting of patients without escalating the symptoms.

The focus areas to raise the efficiency level of corona control and management were identified as:-

  1. House-to-house survey for timely detection;
  2. Efficient ambulance management;
  3. Clinical management of symptomatic cases;
  4. Involvement of the elected representatives in the rural areas for detection of cases and coordination of case management with district health authorities

Currently the total active cases are 1,29,917 and those cured /discharged were 1,29,215. A total of 7,466 patients have died so far. The total confirmed cases so far were 2,66,598.
