Mumbai Dy Municipal Commissioner dies of coronavirus

The epidemic has claimed the lives of 55 municipal staff among 1,712 tested positive for the infection.

MUMBAI, June 9: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Deputy Commissioner Shirish Dixit, 55, died of coronavirus at his home on Tuesday. Earlier he had been tested positive for coronavirus.

Dixit was the Chief Engineer of the Water Supply Department of the municipal corporation.

Coronavirus has claimed the lives of 55 municipal staff among 1,712 staff tested positive for the infection.

In the past 24 hours 2,259 new cases emerged and 120 people died. The total number of cases in the city has gone up to 90,787.

BMC sources, however, said the exact cause of death was not confirmed. Dixit was not involved in any field work, they said. He as working at the BMC headquarters in South Mumbai.

He was instrumental in pushing the Gargai dam project and also in the successful completion of a 15 km water tunnel between Gundawali and Bhandup, a senior official said, reported NDTV.

The employees who die after testing positive for the virus would get compensation of Rs 50 lakh, it was announced recently.
