69 killed, 170 injured in explosion at mosque in Islamabad amid prayers
The suicide bomber first opened fire when stopped by guards and then detonated the explosives, Geo News reported, quoting eyewitnesses.
ISLAMABAD, Feb 6: A devastating explosion at a mosque in Islamabad during Friday
prayers killed 69 people and injured 170 others in one of the deadliest attacks
to strike the city in recent years.
The explosion, which witnesses described as a thunderous blast that shattered
windows across several blocks, took place at the main gate of Shia mosque Imambargah
in central Islamabad, situated in the Shehzad Town area.
A suicide bomber detonated the explosives on being stopped by the guard from
entering the prayer hall. A city-wide emergency has been declared.
However, Geo News quoted eyewitnesses to say the attacker first opened fire
when stopped by guards, injuring security personnel, before running further
inside the premises and triggering the blast around 20 metres from the gate.
The explosion shattered windows of the three-storey Imambargah and nearby residential
buildings.
Rescue workers struggled to pull survivors from the wreckage as hospitals issued
urgent appeals for blood donations. The injured were rushed to the Pakistan
Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
Authorities have yet to confirm responsibility, but security officials said
the attack bore hallmarks of militant groups that have previously struck urban
centres.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the bombing as “an assault on the nation’s
heart” and vowed swift action against those behind the carnage. The capital
has been on high alert in recent weeks, with intelligence warnings of possible
large-scale attacks.
Balochistan bloodbath
The Islamabad tragedy comes just two days after another mass killing in Balochistan,
underscoring the grim escalation of violence across Pakistan. In what locals
have termed a “bloodbath,” armed assailants stormed villages in the province,
leaving dozens dead and many more displaced. The Baloch attack, marked by indiscriminate
firing and torching of homes, has deepened fears of a widening insurgency and
exposed the fragile security situation in the country’s restive southwest. Survivors
recounted harrowing scenes of families fleeing into the hills as gunmen swept
through their communities.
Together, the Islamabad bombing and the Baloch massacre paint a bleak picture
of Pakistan’s security landscape. Analysts warn that the twin tragedies highlight
both the persistence of militant networks and the state’s struggle to contain
violence across multiple fronts.
While Islamabad reels from the shock of a capital city attack, Balochistan
continues to simmer with grievances over political marginalization and economic
neglect, conditions that have fueled unrest for decades.
Human rights groups have urged the government to respond not only with military
force but also with meaningful reforms to address the root causes of instability.
“The cycle of violence will not end until communities feel protected and included,”
one activist said. Yet for now, grief overshadows debate. Funerals are being
held in both Islamabad and Balochistan, with families mourning loved ones lost
to what many describe as senseless brutality.
Earlier, in November, a suicide blast outside a district and sessions court
building in Islamabad killed 12 people and injured more than 30.
The incident has triggered a debate on social media whether the officer refused to take orders from a party leader or he was accused of any corruption, some netizens justifying the handling in either case, that Ratnakar was blocking public welfare work! It is true the Govt machinery has been the enemy Number One of the people of this country, existing for itself and for these politicians, for well over seven decades. India will never make an inch of progress - real progress, not make-believe-progress - unless and until this machinery is eliminated.

PROGNOSIS: It looks a Real New Trump is emerging - courageous, balanced, powerful and disinterested. Determined to save his country from the cliff, he has done quite a few draconian things that will reduce the burden of debts of the Federal entity, like the golden handshake, stopping senseless funding, pulling out of a worthless WHO. Shutting the Education Department is another. On the other hand, running it is also not the Centre's job either (We will convincingly elaborate it in the next chapter).
In India the scene is just the opposite. Centralisation is the core agenda and identity of the ruling dispensation without which it has no existence, or in other words, it exists for that set of schemes only. A realisation of this never dawned upon any Opposition party in 2014 or any time thereafter, what to talk of being able to see it coming 70 years ago! The consequence of all this violation of basic natural law of the universe we cannot predict.

The terminations are part of a large-scale exercise going on all across Fed departments and organisations to reduce wasteful Government expenditure as decided by a Trump in a mess gone berserk, and improve administrative efficiency following the whims of billionaire and his associate Elon MusK and his DOGE. It has not been shared how terminations are going to raise the efficiency bar! It looks like Trump has stolen some of the prescriptions meant for India. But the American problems are quite different.
