Surge in ATM jackpotting in US; six more charged: What is ATM Jackpotting?
The attackers often use the Ploutus malware to take control of the ATM; the machine then spits out all the cash in its chest in one go. The latest group of six charged—Venezuelans—belong to an international terror group specialised in a clutch of assorted crimes globally.
WASHINGTON, Feb 22: ATM "jackpotting" incidents are on the rise across the
United States. Over $20 million was stolen in a year, according to the Department
of Justice.
In the latest case, six people have been charged for their role in a large
conspiracy to steal millions of dollars from ATMs.

In "Jackpotting," criminals use malware to force an ATM to instantly dispense
all its cash, a process also called "spitting out cash." The attackers often
use malware from the "Ploutus" family to infect the machine.
They use stolen keys to open the ATM's top panel. Then a laptop with malicious
software is connected or the hard drive is replaced with a pre-loaded one. They
take control of the machine's cash-dispensing mechanism. There is no need for
any ATM card. The nachine will spit out all the cash instantly.
Of 1,900 incidents reported since 2020, 700 occurred in 2025 alone.
Meanwhile, the FBI also warned that criminals are also using Bitcoin ATMs to
launder money. Over $333 million was looted in 2025 alone.
The FBI advises that there are signs if an ATM has been compromised. The machine
is suddenly out of service. Visible damage is also seen.
The FBI has asked is ATM operators to secure physical access with unique, complex
keys for ATM panels rather than generic ones and use encryption. High-volume
transactions should be watched.
The consumers too need to check the ATM for any tampering of card reader or
other components.
The charged six suspects: In the latest lot of case, a Federal grand
jury in the District of Nebraska returned an indictment Wednesday charging the
six suspects for their role in a conspiracy to steal millions of dollars from
ATMs. They have links to an international ring—Tren de Aragua gang is one. Eighty-seven
others have already been charged bringing the total to 93.
The six charged defendants are Wester Eduardo Dugarte Goicochea, 43; Mauro
Angel Briceno Caldera, 37; Henry Rafael Gonzalez-Gutierrez, 37; Giovanny Miguel
Ocanto Yance, 26, (all residing in Houston), Jelfenson David Bolivar Diaz, 38,
and Arlinzon Jose Reyes Villegas, 21, all six Venezuelan nationals. The indictment
alleges five counts including conspiracy to commit bank fraud, conspiracy to
commit bank burglary and computer fraud, bank fraud, bank burglary and damage
to computers.
It is alleged that Tren de Aragua (TdA), a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization,
conducted jackpotting attacks across America.
If convicted, the defendants face maximum penalties of between 20 and 335 years
in prison.
TdA is a violent transnational criminal organization that originated as a prison
gang in Venezuela in the mid-2000s. Its criminal activities range from drug
trafficking and firearms trafficking, to kidnapping, robbery, theft, fraud and
extortion.
The incident has triggered a debate on social media whether the officer refused to take orders from a party leader or he was accused of any corruption, some netizens justifying the handling in either case, that Ratnakar was blocking public welfare work! It is true the Govt machinery has been the enemy Number One of the people of this country, existing for itself and for these politicians, for well over seven decades. India will never make an inch of progress - real progress, not make-believe-progress - unless and until this machinery is eliminated.

PROGNOSIS: It looks a Real New Trump is emerging - courageous, balanced, powerful and disinterested. Determined to save his country from the cliff, he has done quite a few draconian things that will reduce the burden of debts of the Federal entity, like the golden handshake, stopping senseless funding, pulling out of a worthless WHO. In India the scene is just the opposite. Centralisation is the core agenda and identity of the ruling dispensation without which it has no existence, or in other words, it exists for that set of schemes only.
