All migrant workers to be registered, their skills mapped: SC

“All states and Union Territories shall also give details of all schemes which are currently operating in the states/UTs, benefits of which can be taken by the migrant labourers, including different schemes for providing employment,” it said. The court said the details have to be laid before it before July 8.

NEW DELHI, June 10: India will register 1 cr migrant workers who have returned to their home States following loss of jobs in the wake of the countrywide lockdown clamped to prevent spread of coronavirus epidemic. The registry will keep the details of the skills of the migrants. A directive to this effect has been issued by the Supreme Court to the Centre and the States.

Uttar Pradesh has completed skill mapping of 23.5 lakh workers. The apex court has asked for the current schemes to be tabled before July 8. Counselling centres and help desks are to be set up at block and district levels.

The Supreme Court had said in its order on Tuesday, “Majority of stranded workers have reached their native places. The second major task now to be undertaken by the concerned states and Union Territories is to take care of those migrant workers who have returned to their native places after cessation of their employment.”

“All states and Union Territories shall also give details of all schemes which are currently operating in the states/UTs, benefits of which can be taken by the migrant labourers, including different schemes for providing employment,” it said.

The court said the details have to be laid before it before July 8, the next date of hearing.

The court said it was one thing to have schemes and quite another for workers to get to know about them. “The State shall establish counselling centres, help desks at block and district level to provide all necessary information regarding government schemes and extend helping hand to migrant labourers ,” it said.
