TEHRAN, Mar 1: Senior Iranian cleric Ayatollah Alireza Arafi was named as country’s interim Supreme Leader on Sunday following the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in joint US-Israeli airstrikes on Saturday.

Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, member of a constitutional watchdog, was appointed to the temporary council, along with Iranian President and Chief Justice, that will act as the interim leadership.

As per Article 111 of its Constitution, in emergency the three-member council assumes the Supreme Leader’s powers until a permanent successor is chosen. Ayatollah Alireza Arafi has been appointed as the jurist member of the interim leadership council, and he will technically be responsible for carrying out the Supreme Leader’s duties until a successor is appointed.

An 88-member panel called the Assembly of Experts appoints or removes a Supreme Leader. The law says the Assembly of Experts “must, as soon as possible” pick a new supreme leader.

Arafi, who hails from a prominent clerical family, now faces the daunting task of guiding the Islamic Republic through one of its most perilous moments in decades.

Arafi is no stranger to Iran’s religious and political establishment. He heads the national network of Islamic seminaries, serves as a clerical member of the Guardian Council, and sits on the Assembly of Experts. His long-standing ties to the late Khamenei and his reputation as a seasoned insider have positioned him as a stabilizing figure during this leadership transition.

The appointment comes at a time of escalating regional conflict. Iranian forces have launched strikes against Israel and all across West Asia and targeted US assets, including the USS Abraham Lincoln, in retaliation for the attack that killed Khamenei.

President Mahmoud Pezeshkian has vowed to continue Iran’s aggressive posture, declaring that the nation will “follow the footsteps of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.”

War abroad and instability at home

Domestically, Arafi must contend with uncertainty and potential divisions within Iran’s ruling elite. The Assembly of Experts is expected to deliberate on a permanent successor, but until then, Arafi’s interim stewardship will be critical in maintaining cohesion. Analysts note that his clerical authority and institutional experience may help steady the country, though the scale of external pressure and internal unrest remains immense.

The terminations are part of a large-scale exercise going on all across Fed departments and organisations to reduce wasteful Government expenditure as decided by a Trump in a mess gone berserk, and improve administrative efficiency following the whims of billionaire and his associate Elon MusK and his DOGE. It has not been shared how terminations are going to raise the efficiency bar! It looks like Trump has stolen some of the prescriptions meant for India. But the American problems are quite different.
