Plan to convert stadiums into makeshift covid hospitals as Delhi loses count of numbers

Coronavirus is spreading on every hand in Delhi and faster than the Government can catch. To provide shelter and relief to the ever-increasing number of patients all the stadiums like Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium are proposed to be converted into makeshift hospitals. There would be 5.5 lakh cases in Delhi by next month, according to a guess.

NEW DELHI, June 12: A Delhi Government panel has proposed conversion of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Talkatora Indoor Stadium, Pragati Maidan, Thyagaraj Indoor Stadium and Dhyanchand National Stadium as makeshift covid facilities to take care of the increasing number of coronavirus patients in the Capital.

In Delhi, the infection is spiraling since the past week. Today the total cases so far is 34,687 of which active cases are 20,871, cured/discharged cases 12,731 and deaths 1,085.

The panel was constituted by Lt Governor Anil Baijal. It has suggested setting up oxygen-supported beds and intensive care units at these places. Procurement of equipments and setting up of requisite infrastructure will be done under Section 50 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.

Earlier, at a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) chaired by the Lt Governor, Central Government officials had stated that there is no community transmission of coronavirus in India yet. However, the number of cases are spiraling every day, the situation turning alarming.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had announced on Sunday last that the hospitals in Delhi should be reserved for residents of Delhi only else the situation will get out of hand as the cases are mounting and outsiders would overwhelm the infrastructure here because the treatment is free and better in Delhi, leaving no go-to place for the local residents. The L-G issued an order overruling this decision on Monday.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia had said that there would be 5.5 lakh cases in Delhi by next month and 80,000 beds would be needed.

The mortality rate in Delhi is 2.92 per cent while the national average is 2.81 per cent. The recovery rate is 38 per cent. The doubling rate of cases in Delhi was 12.6 days last week. Per million population 13,543 tests are done here as compared to the national average of 3,531 tests.
