Indian killed in firing by Nepali border guard after altercation

The incident occurred in Narayanpur area of Sarlahi on the Napali side, after an altercation between the Neplal guards and some Indian villagers, who were crossing over despite the coronavirus lockdown there.

SITAMARHI, June 13: An Indian was killed at the Nepal border when a Nepali security guard opened fire on Friday morning to deter a group of Indians from a border village crossing over to Nepal even as the coronavirus lockdown was in force there. The incident occurred beyond Jankinagar on Indian side, inside Sarlahi on the Napali side, after an altercation.

According to Kumar Rajesh Chandra, Director-General of Sashastra Seema Bal, the force looking after the 1,751 km India-Nepal border, the incident took place inside Nepal territory in the morning.

SSB sources said, the incident followed an altercation between the Neplal guards and the Indian villagers. One person was killed and two others injured in the firing by the Nepali guard. Vikesh Yadav (22), who suffered a bullet injury in the abdomen area, died while Uday Thakur (24) and Umesh Ram (18) are injured and admitted to a private hospital in Sitamarhi.

The Nepali troops had objected to the presence of Indians in their area in violation of the lockdown rules in force due to coronavirus pandemic.

India and Nepal have open borders and people move freely across the border to meet their relatives on either side. The incident took place in Narayanpur area of Parsa Rural Municipality in Sarlahi district of Nepal.

According to Nepali side, a group of 25-30 Indian nationals were trying to enter Nepal and they attacked the Nepalese security personnel at Narayanpur.

Initially, the dead man was intending to join his wife and in- laws who are Nepalese and lived on the other side of the border. The border guard tried to prevent him from crossing as the lockdown was in force and therefore free entry/exit is disallowed.

However, a group of villagers agathered and in the ensuing altercation the guard opened fire several times.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that one Lagan Kishore, who was detained by Nepal's security personnel after the firing, returned to Sitamarhi after being released.
