First batch of US ventilators arrive in Delhi

The 100 ventilators form the first batch of the offer made by President Trump last month as a goodwill gesture to India in the fight against coronavirus. They will be given to the hospitals after a function.

NEW DELHI, June 16: The US has handed over the first batch of 100 ventilators President Donald Trump had offered India as a gesture of goodwill for the treatment of coronavirus patients last month.

US Ambassador to India Kenneth I Juster on Tuesday handed over the ventilators from US Agency for International Development (USAID) at the Indian Red Cross Headquarters in New Delhi.

"COVID-19 pandemic poses an unprecedented global health threat to all of us. It is only through partnership and cooperation that we will be best able to ensure a healthy future for our people" the US envoy said.

The ventilators were manufactured by the US firm, Zoll. After an inaugural function, they will be given to hospitals.

Ventilator has become an essential medical device in the treatment of serious cases of coronavirus, which affects the lungs mainly, breathing becoming difficult. The patient consequently dies for want of oxygen.

"I am proud to announce that the United States will donate ventilators to our friends in India. We stand with India and PM Narendra Modi during this pandemic. We're also cooperating on vaccine development. Together we will beat the invisible enemy!" Trump had tweeted last month.
