Corona scare in Beijing: 1,200 flights cancelled; all schools closed

The Beijing coronavirus is feared to be much more ferocious than the Wuhan type. Shandong, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Fujian provinces and Shanghai have introduced quarantine for those coming from Beijing.

BEIJING, June 17: Over 1,200 scheduled flights to and from Beijing's airports were cancelled and the schools in the city were also closed on Wednesday morning following an outbreak of coronavirus (covid) epidemic.

The city reported 31 new cases on Wednesday. Residents were told not to leave Beijing to prevent it from spreading. The outbreak was first reported last Thursday, and by Tuesday there were 106 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the city.

It is unknown how the virus came to Beijing. According to the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, "the virus in Beijing is a mutated variety from Europe, which does not prove it comes from European countries directly, but more information is needed, as so far there is no RNA sequence that's the same in the database."

It is also stated by official sources that the new cases are related to the Xinfadi wholesale market in Fengtai district. The virus was found on salmon cutting boards there.

Beijing has disinfected 276 farm produce markets and closed 11 such underground and semi-underground markets. A total of 33,173 catering service providers have also been disinfected, according to the paper.

Beijing's education authority announced on Tuesday night that all school and college classes must stop forthwith.

People in Beijing have been barred from leaving the city. Shandong, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Liaoning, Heilongjiang and Fujian provinces and Shanghai have introduced quarantine measures for travelers from Beijing.

The coronavirus found in Beijing's Xinfadi wholesale market is probably more infectious than that detected in Wuhan's Huanan seafood market, a virologist said.
