242 Delhi school auditoriums to be converted into covid care centres
To meet the mounting requirements of beds for coronavirus patients, the Delhi Government is converting 242 school auditoriums into covid hospitals, apart from using the hotels and banquet halls and modified rail coaches for the purpose. The Government is estimating that the demand for beds would be around 80,000 by the end of July when the cases would rise to 5.5 lakhs.

NEW DELHI, June 17: The Delhi Government has decided to convert 242 school auditoriums into covid treatment facilities as there is an acute shortage of beds in the hospitals even as the number of coronavirus cases is going up every day.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Wednesday, "To meet the requirement of additional beds, which is estimated to be around 80,000 by the end of July, the Delhi Government is planning to use the auditoriums in nearly 242 schools to set up additional beds for COVID-19 patients requiring hospitalization."

By Wednesday, the total coronavirus cases had reached 47,102 and the toll is 1904.

The Government is also using converted rail coaches to provide beds for the mounting number of corona patients. The Central Government is modifying 5,321 coaches for use as hospital wards. Conversion of one coach is costing Rs 2 lakh and the total will come to Rs 100 cr. These are planned to be positioned at 215 rail stations across the country. In 85 of them, the Railways will provide the health care facilities while in the rest the States will take the responsibility. The Centre will provide 500 coaches for Delhi.

Fifty such isolation coaches are already functioning in Shakur Basti railway station. "We have been provided 50 coaches with 800 beds so far. I went to inspect these coaches... But soaring temperatures will make it problematic for our medical staff to operate while wearing heavy PPEs," Sisodia said in a statement.

Apart from these, the vast Radha Soami Satsang centre ground is also being converted into a makeshift hospital that can accommodate 10,000 patients.

Several hotels and banquet halls have already been booked for converting into covid care centres.
