Coronavirus Updates: Minister refuses Merkel’s handshake!

In a demonstrative gesture, German Minister Horst Seehofer kept his hand to himself when Angela Merkel wanted to shake hands with him. However, Germany has not issued any advisory as yet against handshakes as a preventive step to contain transmission of coronavirus.

BERLIN, Mar 3: German Chancellor Angela Merkel was refused a handshake by Interior Minister Horst Seehofer at a summit at the federal chancellery in Berlin yesterday morning. Seehofer had told German media earlier that he had stopped shaking people's hands as a precaution in view of the spreading coronavirus contagion.

Seehofer kept his hand to himself. Merkel took it the rebuff the right way, remarking: "That is the right thing to do."

They were going to hold a meeting on migration here on Monday. The guests just laughed.

"Merkel, 65, and Seehofer, 70, have had plenty of tensions in their relationship in recent years, with the interior minister taking a hard line on refugees after Merkel opened Germany's doors in 2015, but today's encounter was more good-natured," wrote the Daily Mail.

Germany has not issued any advisory as yet against handshakes. France, however, has urged people to refrain from shaking hands.

Germany has reported so far only over a hundred cases of coronavirus but has banned assemblies and gatherings of people to prevent coronavirus transmission.

'Namste' comes to China!

BEIJING: Billboards here ask people to greet each other by joining hands (like the Indian 'namaste!') and not to shake hands in order to prevent spread of coronavirus infection, reports said. To wish each other, they could also do 'gong shou' gesture of placing one fist in the other palm, it is being broadcast.
