Brazil's Prez fined for not wearing mask in public places

President Bolsonaro and the Governors have been at loggerheads over the restrictions to check the spread of coronavirus. The former called the Guvs' action in imposing curbs as "a bit over the top."

BRASILIA, June 24: A Federal court here has fined President Jair Bolsonaro for not wearing face mask in public places. Bolsonaro held the view that wearing of mask and restrictions on movement are unnecessary. The State Governors had imposed the restrictions to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The President had described the requirements to control the pandemic as "a bit over the top" and the epidemic as "a little cold". He wanted that the economy should get priority as the curbs could be more damaging than the pandemic itself.

Federal district Governor Ibaneis Rocha introduced the rule requiring people to cover their nose and mouth in all public spaces. On 11 May, a fine of 2,000 reais ($387; £310) per day was introduced.

With Federal Judge Renato Borelli's ruling on Monday any public official who does not comply with the requirement will also incur the 2,000-reais fine.

Brazil has shot up the list of worst-affected countries with 11,52,066 cases and a toll of 52,788, next only to the US. However, the President and the Governors have been at loggerheads over the corona restrictions.
