India Unlock II begins on July 1: No major relaxations

International flights and metro trains will remain grounded. Schools, cinemas too will not reopen now. Restrictions on inter-State, intra-State movements lifted. There is some relaxation in night curfew.

NEW DELHI, June 30: India will begin Unlock II of coronavirus lockdown on July 1. As the situation has only worsened day by day since the time Unlock I was announced, the number of cases reaching 5,66,840 and the casualties 16,893 as on Tuesday, the new phase will not have any substantial relaxations unlike what was planned.

From the bottom of a list pf over 180 countries afflicted by the epidemic, India has steadily reached near the top at No 4 position. The saving grace has been that the cases in India did not shoot up overnight like in Italy, Spain or New York. The climbing has been at a steady pace over the last six months allowing for sufficient leverage for epidemic management.

Unlock II will be till July 31. Night curfew is relaxed. It will be from 10 pm to 5 am only. There will be no restrictions on inter-State or intra-State movements. Training institutes, both Government and private, will be allowed to run from July 15.

However, international flights and metro trains will remain grounded. So also schools, cinemas, gyms, swimming pools and bars. Sports, entertainment events, religious gatherings, political and cultural meetings, academic functions will be barred.

The lockdown curbs will continue in containment zones. However, the State Governments have been asked to take their own decisions based on the assessment of the situation available in their territories.

The notification dated May 30 for Unlock I had allowed malls, restaurants, places of worship and hotels to open from June 8. Train services and domestic flights had already been allowed.

Maharashtra which always clocked the highest number of cases and casualties in India, has extended the lockdown till July 31. The State has so far recorded 1.69 lakh cases, while the country logged over 5 lakh cases. India has tested 86,08,654 samples so far where the population is over 130 crores. Globally, there have been over a crore cases and 5 lakh deaths. Tamil Nadu also extended the lockdown tiil July 31. Manipur and Assam extended it partialy.
