Brazil's Prez Bolsonaro, who swore not to wear face mask, tests positive for corona

The President, who described coronavirus pandemic as a "little cold," was in a running battle with the State Governor who made wearing of face masks compulsory. The President who used to make public appearances without the mask was fined and warned by the court last month.

BRASILIA, July 7: Brazil's President Jair Bolsonaro, who was opposed to all restrictions imposed to prevent coronavirus transmission and violated the rule that made wearing of face mask compulsory, has tested positive for coronavirus, he himself told the TV channels on Tuesday.

Bolsonaro had taken the test on Monday. He said, "Everyone knew that it would reach a considerable part of the population sooner or later. It was positive for me."

"On Sunday, I wasn't feeling very well. On Monday, it got worse when I started feeling tired and some muscle pain. I also had a 38 degree C fever. Given those symptoms, the presidential doctor said there was suspicion of Covid-19," Bolsonaro said.

"I am feeling very well (now). I believe that the way they administered the hydroxychloroquine on, the effect was immediate," he said.

He used to attend public functions, mingle with crowds and shake hands with supporters without mask, dismissing the epidemic as just a "little cold". He wanted priority to economy and not the pandemic and opposed the lockdown and restrictions on movements, which he described as "a bit over the top". He said the curbs could be more damaging than the pandemic itself.

He was in a running battle with the State Governor who made wearing of face masks compulsory. The President made public appearances without mask and was fined and warned by the court last month.

Over 65,000 people have died of the virus in Brazil, which has now become the second worst-hit in the world after the US.

He had once a meeting with US President Donald Trump in Florida and many in his entourage later tested positive for coronavirus. The lab result came just days after he attended the American independence day function at the US embassy where he was seen with his arm around the ambassador. Most guests were without a mask.
