Why is this hullabaloo over US foreign student visa suspension?

Seemingly simple logic: Where universities have gone 100% online, what is the fun in foreign students coming to or staying back in the US, asks the Federal Government, and tells such students to change to a hybrid school or course where there is some in-person instruction that will justify their stay here, or go home and come back when the schools open. The catch is: Trump wants varsities to open despite coronavirus as that is the Republican economics. But Dems want them shut as long as corona is around. Nobody is at fault! But then why is this hullabaloo in India!

Looking for the icing on the cake! Apart from content education, the students also look forward to overseas educational opportunities to enhance the quality of their life experiences.

WASHINGTON, July 9: The US immigration authorities are withdrawing the visas of foreign students who are already here and have got admission in colleges for the fall semester where the courses will be fully online in view of the coronavirus epidemic.

They have been asked to leave the country or take admission in colleges where courses are at least in part in-person. If colleges don't open and courses are 100% online, in such cases why students should be allowed to stay here, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is asking.

Similarly, those who have got admission and are planning to come over have also been barred from entry to the US if the courses they have taken admission in are 100% online.

The orders were issued on Monday. The ICE has written to all States about the new visa restrictions. The ICE said, “The US Department of State will not issue visas to students enrolled in schools and/or programs that are fully online for the fall semester nor will US Customs and Border Protection permit these students to enter the United States.”

And those who are enrolled in such universirties and are currently residing in the US must depart the country or take other measures, such as transferring to a school with in- person instruction to remain in lawful status or potentially face immigration consequences including, but not limited to, the initiation of removal proceedings, it further said.

A Homeland Security official was quoted as saying, "Go home and return when the schools open."

The new rule is interpreted as the Republican Federal Government's move to get the schools reopened although there is no let-up in coronavirus infections.

With the result, the Harvard university and the Massachusetts university have gone to the court against the visa cancellation. Harvard university has announced it will go fully online in the fall session.

Meanwhile, the Indian embassy here took up te matter with US officials.

There were one million international students in the US in 2018-19, China topping the list.
