United Airlines to lay off 36,000 employees in US

United can't lay off staff before October 1 as it has received $5b as Federal aid to meet payroll costs. Meanwhile, airlines unions are pressuring Congress to approve $25b more to cover costs till March. Already $25b has been given to the aviation industry.

WASHINGTON, July 9: Hit hard by coronavirus, United Airlines will lay off 36,000 of its employees, half of its strength in the US. They could be furloughed in October. The prospects of the aviation industry recovering in the immediate future receded with coronavirus showing no signs of abating anywhere across the world.

United Airlines is sending the required 60-day notice of termination or early retirement to the employees. The furloughs include 15,000 flight attendants, 11,000 customer service and gate agents, 5,500 maintenance workers and 2,250 pilots.

“The United Airlines projected furlough numbers are a gut punch, but they are also the most honest assessment we’ve seen on the state of the industry,” said Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants.

United can't lay off staff before October 1 as it has received $5b as Federal aid on conditions to cover payroll costs. Meanwhile, airlines unions are pressuring Congress to approve $25b more to cover costs till March. Already $25b has been given to the aviation industry to serve the purpose till October. United said it is losing $40 million a day.
