Trump vouches for hydroxychloroquine, FDA joins his opponents

There is a nasty political war on everything in America nowadays a la Indian politics. Whatever Trump proposes his rivals will oppose, in politics and in the administration. One of the current topics is hydroxychloroquine. Trump himself is taking it for well over a month and makes claims over its benefits. This is the second battle for hydroxychloroquine!

WASHINGTON, July 10: US President Donald Trump is again pushing malaria drug hydroxychloroquine as a promising preventive as well as curative medicine for coronavirus infection although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is, in a volte face, repeatedly saying its efficacy and safety are unproven.

Hydroxychloroquine has assumed political overtones. All those who are against Trump are against the drug. A huge debate is raging among politicians as well as among experts. The pharmaceutical industry is taking advantage of this division to make a killing in the corona business pushing their own favourites.

Trump is regularly consuming hydroxychloroquine for over a month as a preventive drug after two of his staff contracted corona. When he first suggested the benefits of HCQ he was accused of promoting a European pharma. But what really happened was something else: The Prez with the good intention of making the drug available in the American market at a time thousands of his countrymen were dying of coronavirus every day, approached Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for access to some of the surplus stocks by lifting the export ban which Modi obliged. Modi lifted the ban and a plane load of HCQ was delivered to his best friend in the US.

"The President has always said that he sees hydroxychloroquine as a very promising prophylactic but that every person should not take it unless they get a prescription from their doctor," White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said at a news conference on Thursday.

Trump asserts he has not suffered from any side-effects although it is said that the malaria drug, cheap, easily available and safe, can cause minor cardiac issues in some people. It has been included in Indian hospital prescriptions countrywide for coronavirus as a preventive medicine especially for the health workers and is continuing as it has been found safe. However, in corona cases, the doctors administer the drug on the merit of cases. In comorbid cases an ECG is taken to rule out any pre-existing heart problems like when they administer Remdesivir they watch out for any kidney issues.

Earlier this week, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said he had tested positive for coronavirus and was taking hydroxychloroquine and feeling better. Bolsonaro is asking his Government to make the drug available. He advises Brazilians to take it as a preventive as well as curative medicine.

According to reports, three randomized FDA studies have shown no benefit for hydroxychloroquine in hospitalized patients, but earlier it had given the authorization for use. A RECOVERY study conducted in the UK and another conducted by the National Institutes of Health also found no benefit. But an Henry Ford study said death rates were 50% lower among patients in hospitals treated with hydroxychloroquine. The FDA cancelled the emergency authorization for the drug, triggering the current debate.
