Finally, Trump wears a mask! FLOTUS follows suit!

Trump had always spurned aides' advice and medical opinion about the necessity of wearing a face mask as a prevention against the raging coronavirus epidemic. Now, finally, he is seen wearing a dark face mask with the presidential seal on while walking through the corridors of Walter Reed military hospital. First Lady Melania Trump followed suit, next day. But, the poor mask has become a symbol of an emerging political division across America on critical health and economic issues.

WASHINGTON, July 12: Like his friend Brazil's Prez Bolsonaro, US President Donald Trump also has been holding out not wearing a face mask despite several White House staff contracting coronavirus.

But finally he was seen wearing one for the first time on Saturday, while walking through the corridors of Walter Reed military hospital where he met with wounded veterans. "I've never been against masks but I do believe they have a time and a place," Trump said there.

His aides and medical advisers had been asking him to wear the mask to at least set a public health example as a peopl'e leader even as coronavirus has claimed lakhs of lives even in the US. But he always had a scorn for the stuff.

Trump had been avoiding mask at rallies, media briefings and public places elsewhere and everywhere. He had an excuse, once he said mask will make him look weak. And likened himself to the Lone Ranger, if he wore a mask.

First Lady Melania Trump tweeted a video wearing a face mask a day after the President visited Walter Reed Hospital wearing mask.

But there is much more to the simple mask than meets the eye.

Coronavirus has created a visible division in the US on political lines. This split is also perceptible in the economoc policies of the two parties, the GoPs and the Dems, when it comes to opening up the business and the schools.

Listen to Melania's video in this connection: She declares that "Children's mental health and social development must be as much of a priority as physical health." Open up the schools! Even as the epidemic is engulfing the country with no sign of a let-up.

Besides, Trump's partymen argue that mask impinges on their individual freedom, a freedom that animates America as a nation, as they claim. There have been countrywide assaults on public health officers who enforced the restrictions that also included social distancing, on sections of people, leading to their resignations en masse. This alarming trend is continuing unabated, more of it in Texas, California, Chicago and Alabama.

What happened to Trump's friend Bolsonaro? In a country with 18,07,496 cases as of now and a casualty figure of 70,601 deaths, occupying no 2 position in the list of worst affected countries, only next to the US, a thousand people dying every day, its President calls the epidemic a "little cold." Bolsonaro was even once fined by the court for violating the rule that every one must wear face mask in public as a preventive step against coronavirus. He tested positive for the infection last Monday, he himself told the TV channels. Now fallen in line, he can be seen in the mask!
