Rs 10,000 fine on paan shop owners for customers spitting on road in Ahmedabad; no-mask fine hiked to Rs 500

AHMEDABAD, July 14: Ahmedabad municipal corporation has intensified its coronavirus control programme in the city as the cases are spiralling. The fine for not wearing face mask or spitting on the road has been raised from Rs 200 to Rs 500. The civic body has also decided to slap a hefty fine of Rs 10,000 on paan shop owners if customers are found spitting in the open near their shops.

The order has been issued under the Epidemic Diseases Act to contain the spread of the epidemic. The order came into effect wef Monday 4 pm.

The city administration has identified not wearing face mask, spitting in public place and not maintaining social distance as the three serious offences under the coronavirus control programme. So far, 1.72 lakh people have been fined in the city for not wearing face mask and 94 units sealed for not following social distancing and other rules.

"People are still not following the mandatory rule of wearing masks, and a number of them still come out without wearing masks. It has been decided to increase the fine for not wearing masks from Rs 200 to Rs 500. Moreover, a paan- masala shop owner will be fined Rs 10,000 if his customers are found spitting in the public near his shop," an official told newsmen.
