KOLKATA, July 18: The Civil Aviation Ministry on Friday extended the restrictions on incoming flights from high-risk cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Nagpur and Ahmedabad to Kolkata airport till July 31 following a request from the Bengal Government. Many other States too have such restrictions as a prevention against coronavirus.

“The restriction on arriving flights to #KolkataAirport from 6 cities viz Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Nagpur & Ahmedabad has been extended upto 31st July,” the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport tweeted.

Anticipating re-opening, airlines had started bookings. When the suspension began, the passenger traffic had come down to 9,000 from 15,000.

Earlier the flights were banned from July 6 till July 19 after the State Government wrote to the Civil Aviation Ministry to impose the restrictions as coronavirus infections were rising in those cities.

When Bengal was lashed by Amphan cyclone also it had to suspend flights although other States had resumed air service after the lifting of the coronavirus lockdown on May 25.

Meanwhile, Bengal reported the number of coronavirus cases at 38,011 with 1,049 deaths.
