ICMR study on efficacy of BCG in prevention of covid in elderly

NEW DELHI: The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) will conduct a study to find out if BCG vaccination for tuberculosis is effective in preventing coronavirus infection and reducing mortality among elderly people.

The study will be carried out in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi. About 1,500 volunteers above 60 years of age will be chosen, the ICMR said. The study of the after-effects will continue for six months.

Apart from ICMR's National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis (NIRT) in Chennai, which has already started the work, the other five centres are: National Institute of Occupational Health, Ahmedabad, National Institute for Research in Environmental Health, Bhopal, GS Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai, National Institute for Implementation Research on Non- Communicable Diseases, Jodhpur, and AIIMS, New Delhi.

The Bacille Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccine that is administered to babies as part of the national immunization programme for more than 50 years in the country will be used in this study.

The study will mainly find out if a BCG vaccination can prevent occurrence of covid and reduce mortality in elderly people.
