Oxford vaccine works: Trial results announced

The vaccine has successfully made antibodies and T-cells in all volunteers in the clinical trials, the results of which were being eagerly awaited by the scientific community world over. If all goes well, it will be available for the public by year-end. But Prime Minister Boris Johnson, wanting to be cautious this time, said: "We're not there yet."

LONDON, July 20: The results of the clinical trial of the Oxford University's vaccine have just been announced: ChAdOx1 has successfully made antibodies and T-cells in all 1,077 volunteers that can neutralise the ferocious coronavirus safely.

The vaccine is a genetically engineered, harmless virus that causes the common cold (attenuated and non-replicating adenovirus), but modified to look like coronavirus by transferring the spike's genetic code. Now it will mimic coronavirus.

The vaccine, which resembles the coronavirus, successfully produced antibodies and induced T-cells, fully preparing the immune system for a twin attack on the invading pathogen.

Antibodies can neutralise coronavirus. They are proteins produced by the immune system. They neutralise the virus by holding on to it and thereby disabling it from attacking human cells.

T-cells work like white blood cells that destroy any pathogen in the blood stream. But, additionally, T-cells destroy the infected cells and stop further complications. (The vaccine may be inducing production of cytotoxic T-cells, which are capable of destroying infected cells, alongwith the virus. There are several types of T-cells.)

The vaccine was found safe in the trials but with some hiccups. There were no serious side-effects yet 70% of people had fever or headache. The researchers said that is a minor issue.

This vaccine if confirmed safe in the next round of trials involving 10,000 people also, it will be made available for the public by year-end.

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson, wanting to be cautious this time, said: "We're not there yet."

The Oxford vaccine is one of 23 vaccines now being tested in human trials. Over 130 vaccines are in pre-clinical trials.
