A curtailed Haj pilgrimage to start on July 29: Saudi officials

The 1,000 pilgrims who will be allowed will be from among those who are already within Saudi Arabia currently.

MECCA, July 22: Only 1,000 people will be allowed to take part in the Haj pilgrimage this year beginning on July 29. It has been scaled down because of the coronavirus epidemic, which has claimed lakhs of lives all over the world, Saudi Arabia has said.

The Muslim pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia usually sees 25 lakh people travelling there.

"The stand of pilgrims on Mount Arafat, the peak of the Haj ritual, falls on Thursday," the official Saudi Press Agency cited the Supreme Court as saying. The event starts on Wednesday. The Islamic lunar calendar sets the dates.

It was reported that 1,000 pilgrims who will be allowed will be from among those who are already within Saudi Arabia currently.

According to officials, those taking part will be tested for coronavirus before arriving in Mecca and are required to quarantine at home after return from the ritual.
