SC issues contempt notice to Prashant Bhushan over tweets on court, CJI

NEW DELHI, July 23: The Supreme Court, taking suo motu notice of two tweets by civil rights lawyer Prashant Bhushan, has issued contempt notice to him. One of the tweets is on the court's “role” in the “last six years,” and the other on sitting Chief Justice SA Bobde riding a motorcycle without a helmet and face mask.

The case is scheduled for hearing on August 5. The court said it undermines the court's dignity and of the office of the Chief Justice of India in the public eye.

“We are, prima facie, of the view that the aforesaid statements on Twitter have brought the administration of justice in disrepute and are capable of undermining the dignity and authority of the institution of Supreme Court in general and the office of the Chief Justice of India in particular, in the eyes of public at large. We take suo motu cognisance of the aforesaid tweet also apart from the tweet quoted above and suo motu register the proceedings”, a three-judge Bench led by Justice Arun Mishra said.

The court has asked Twitter, a social media platform, also to reply.

Meanwhile, another suo motu contempt case against Bhushan, relating to an interview on Niyamgiri mining lease case, will come up for hearing on Friday.
