North Korea reports its first coronavirus case, locks down border city

Kim Jong-un ordered a "maximum emergency system" to check its spread. Pyongyang alleges a runaway who went to South Korea three years ago returned with the infection last week. It claims so far there has been no case as it was quick to close its borders when six months ago the epidemic began spreading in the world.

PYONGYANG, July 26: North Korea, which had boasted of a "shining success" in preventing coronavirus from entering the country and reportedly had nil cases so far, on Saturday reported its first case from Kaesong city and locked down the town bordering South Korea.

A person who defected to South Korea three years returned on July 19 infected with covid, crossing the the demarcation line illegally, State news agency KCNA said.

The authoritarian country's leader Kim Jong-un ordered immediate lockdown of the city. He ordered a "maximum emergency system" to check its spread.

"An emergency event happened in Kaesong city where a runaway who went to the south three years ago, a person who is suspected to have been infected with the vicious virus returned on 19 July after illegally crossing the demarcation line," the news agency said.

North Korea was quick to close its borders when six months ago the epidemic began spreading to other countries from China's Wuhan where it originated.

The pandemic has so far infected 1,60,52,701 people and killed 6,44,811 across the world.
