China detects virus in frozen food imports from Brazil, Ecuador
China had on June 19 suspended shrimp imports from Ecuador after detecting coronavirus in shipments. Ecuadorean producers said China was tarnishing the reputation of the industry.

BEIJING, Aug 13: China has reportedly detected coronavirus in food packages imported from Ecuador and Brazil. It had earlier banned food imports from Europe and Ecuador when the virus was detected in the wholesale markets in Beijing a month ago, fearing new outbreaks. Ecuador was allowed to resume import of packaged food last week.

Again packages of frozen Ecuadorian shrimp were found contaminated in the north-western Xi’An city in Shannxi province. Brazilian frozen chicken wings imported to southern city of Shenzhen have also tested positive for the viral traces.

China had launched an intesive screening of all food imports after the huge Xinfadi market in Beijing was said to be the source of cluster infections in June. The virus was found on chopping boards.

China had on June 19 suspended shrimp imports from Ecuador after detecting coronavirus in shipments. Ecuadorean producers had said China is “tarnishing the reputation” of the industry.

China’s customs authority had said samples from shipments of Industrial Pesquera Santa Priscila SA, Empacreci SA and Empacadora Del Pacifico Sociedad Anonima showed contamination. But tests on the frozen shrimp and inner packaging were negative.

This was the first time China detecting corona in imported frozen foods. “The test results suggested that the container environment and the outer packaging of the goods of the three companies were at risk of contamination ... and the companies’ food safety management system was not in order,” the General Administration of Customs said in a statement on its website.
