Supreme Court may resume physical hearing
The 7-judge committee, instituted by CJI SA Bobde, has recommended resumption of limited physical hearings. Three courtrooms in the Supreme Court will conduct final hearings of old cases.

NEW DELHI, Aug 12: The Supreme Court may resume limited physical hearing of cases on a trial basis in two weeks. Because of the coronavirus epidemic, hearings in cases have been held through video conferencing since March 23.

A 7-judge committee, instituted by CJI SA Bobde to look into the matter, has recommended resumption of limited physical hearings.

Like other professionals and workers world over, the advocates too have been put to economic hardships due to the coronavirus lockdown and later video conferencing putting limitations on their work volume.

The physical hearings may resume in three courts as demanded by the Bar Association of India. These three courtrooms in the top court will conduct final hearing of old cases. Virtual hearings for all other cases will continue. So, the three wings of the Supreme Court premises will have a functioning courtroom each. Glass partitions and exhaust fans will be installed. Social distancing will be maintained.

The committee comprised of Justice NV Ramana, Justice Arun Mishra, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice UU Lalit, Justice AM Khanwilkar, Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice L Nageswara Rao.
