Railways refund exceeds its earnings from tickets
The Railways informed the RTI activist from Madhya Pradesh that the freight earnings during the period were enough to compensate for the difference.

NEW DELHI, Aug 17: It is not surprising that the Indian Railways' refunds have exceeded its earnings from ticket bookings.

According to a RTI reply provided by the Railways, the revenue for the first quarter of the current financial year was Rs 1,066 crore and it refunded over and above this for the coronavirus lockdown period. It has not been explained how this is rationally possible.

Till August 11 this year, the Railways earned Rs 2,368 crore in passenger bookings whereas the refund due to cancellation of trains stood at Rs 2,628 crore.

The Railways justifies its position in its reply to the RTI activist from Madhya Pradesh that the freight earnings during the period were enough to compensate for the difference.

It informed Chandra Shekhar Gaur, "The minus figures are being shown due to the fact that the value of refunds is more than the value of tickets booked," said a Railway spokesperson.

It was further explained that due to the suspension of services during the lockdown, tickets booked for travel in April, May and June were offered refunds, while fewer tickets were booked during these three months due to the restrictions.

The Railways had earned Rs 4,345 crore in April, Rs 4,463 crore in May and Rs 4,589 crore in June. It said that due to the pandemic there may be a loss of Rs 40,000 crore this financial year.

"Passenger revenues of Railways are naturally expected to be low this year due to suspension of most of the services due to COVID-19 pandemic," the spokesman said, it was reported.

Freight traffic seems to have done well as the Railways was the only mode to ferry essentials goods. The earning on this account was Rs 5,744 crore In April, 7,289 crore in May and Rs 8,706 crore in June. Last year's respective figures were Rs 9,331 crore, Rs 10,032 crore and Rs 9,702 crore.
