The worst is yet to come; Millions more will die, more from hunger than from coronavirus, forecasts philanthropist Bill Gates

Bill Gates illustrated a contrast in the handling of the pandemic by political leaderships in various countries. While China had nowhere to go to looking for lessons how to deal with the totally new phenomenon as it arrived first in their country, and they remarkably succeeded in designing appropriate ways to check the pandemic in no time, countries where it happened much later have only played havoc with the lives of their peoples, bungling healthcare initiatives and wrecking the economies.

NEW DELHI, Aug 21: Millions more will die before the pandemic is over, “the worst is still ahead,” so said Bill Gates, Microsoft founder and healthcare philanthropist. And, most of these deaths will not be from coronavirus, but due to the collapse of healthcare systems and economies worldwide, he explained.

He said a "reasonably" effective vaccine will be available by the end of 2021 and further spread of the epidemic could be halted.

Gates explained that more than 90 per cent of the deaths would be unrelated to coronavirus. "Lockdowns will restrict people's access to medicine for other diseases. Subsequently, deaths from malaria and HIV will increase," he said.

A political divide over the idea of freedom vis-a-vis wearing the mask or maintaining social distance messed up the US response to the pandemic, paying the price for it ultimately. According to Gates, Trump supporters have wielded “freedom” to make a political statement.

Will it change if Joe Biden comes to power? “I don’t think a change in administrations will get people to wear masks,” Gates said. “It’s hard to see how we build that trust network and improved behavior. It’ll mostly be incremental.”

Gates also explained that the US was unprepared from the beginning, as testing efforts were slow to make an impact once the virus began to spread. China, on the other hand, “did a very good job of suppressing the virus,” thanks, in part, to the “typical, fairly authoritarian” approach.

The Bill Gates Foundation contributed more than $350 million towards the pandemic control, but that will not suffice, more is needed, Gates said in an interview to 'The Economist.'

"Billions must be spent to produce COVID-19 vaccine to stop the economic damage, which is costing trillions," he said. There is no reliable data coming from many poor countries to properly assess the extent of the economic damage.

"By August 17, Africa has recorded more than 25,000 COVID-19 deaths and in India, nearly 52,000 have died from the disease. However, the actual number in both places is much higher," Gates added.

"Novel coronavirus is not as contagious as some other diseases. Around 30-60 per cent of the world’s population needs to be vaccinated to contain the pandemic," he said, adding, "Fortunately, this isn't measles, we don't need over 90 per cent of people to take the vaccine."
