Two Chinese held shadowing Dalai Lama in Dharamshala; security beefed up
China has of late stepped up its snooping on Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama through a network of secret agents. Two suspects have been detained in Dharamshala, where Dalai Lama lives. Their ring leader Chinese national Charlie Peng was earlier found running a hawala racket of Rs 1,000 cr using dubious firms and fake accounts. About 40 dubious bank accounts were detected. Charlie Peng and his Indian associates and bankers were raided by the Income Tax Department early this month. He had got married to a Manipuri woman to obtain his Indian passport.

DHARAMSHALA, Aug 25: Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama's security has been tightened following reports that some Chinese nationals are shadowing him. Two people have been detained who were found tracking Dalai Lama's movements.

According to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, a Chinese national, Charlie Peng, is the leader of the ring operating around Dharamshala, where the Dalai Lama's residence is.

Charlie Peng was earlier held by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for allegedly running a money-laundering racket. He was found to be in possession of a fake Indian passport and was said to be funnelling money from China for nefarious activities in India.

The two detained are a Chinese woman, Lan Hoo, and another person identified as Sonu Bangtoo. They were found to be agents of Charlie Peng.

Thakur said Charlie Peng was providing money to these two persons for tracking Dalai Lama's movements. They are being questioned.

Charlie Peng was earlier found running a hawala racket of Rs 1,000 cr using dubious firms and fake accounts. About 40 dubious bank accounts were detected. Charlie Peng, alias Luo Sang, and his Indian associates and bankers were raided by the Income Tax Department early this month. There have also been transactions involving Hong Kong and US dollars.

Charlie Peng was arrested in September, 2018 on charges of fraud and forgery and running hawala racket. He got a fake Indian passport and Aadhaar from Manipur after marrying a woman there.

The Dalai Lama fled Tibet after the Tibetan uprising and has been living in exile in Dharamshala since 1959. A proponent of peace, he was conferred Nobel peace prize in 1989.
