Prashant Bhushan to pay Re 1 fine to apex court for contempt of court
Prashant Bhushan has said he proposes to submit himself to the order and will respectfully pay the fine. The Supreme Court pronounced the sentence of the civil rights advocate on Monday, ordering him to pay Re 1 as fine, or, in default, undergo a jail term of 3 months in the contempt of court case against him. He was on August 14 convicted of contempt of court by posting tweets derogatory of the apex court and the current and former Chief Justices of India.

NEW DELHI, Aug 31: Senior advocate Prashant Bhushan, who was sentenced by the Supreme Court earlier in the day on Monday to a fine of Re 1 for contempt of court, said that he "Will respectfully pay Re 1 fine."

Bhushan said in a statement in response to the sentencing, "While I reserve the right to seek a review of the conviction and sentencing, I propose to submit myself to this order and will respectfully pay the fine, just as I would have submitted to any other lawful punishment... I have had the greatest respect for the institution of the Supreme Court."

"My lawyer & senior colleague Rajiv Dhavan contributed 1 Re immediately after the contempt judgement today which I gratefully accepted," Bhushan said in another tweet.

Bhushan announced at a press conference, "I propose to submit to the order and respectfully pay the fine."

He was convicted of contempt of court by posting tweets derogatory of the Supreme Court and the current and former Chief Justices of India on August 14. Although he was given the option and sufficient time to apologise, he stood his ground.

He had posted the following tweets on June 27 and 29:-

"When historians in the future look back at the last six years to see how democracy has been destroyed in India even without a formal Emergency, they will particularly mark the role of the SC in this destruction, and more particularly the role of the last four CJIs."

"The CJI rides a Rs 50-lakh motorcycle belonging to a BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) leader at Raj Bhavan, Nagpur, without wearing a mask or helmet, at a time when he keeps the SC on lockdown mode denying citizens their fundamental right to access justice!"

Another contempt of court case of 2009 is also pending against Bhushan before the apex court. He had called former Chief Justices corrupt.
