Demanding more time to repay loans, cab drivers go on strike in Delhi-NCR
The RBI had ordered a moratorium on repayment of loan instalments due during March 1, 2020 to May 31, 2020 period because of the coronavirus lockdown and subsequent loss of business. Later it was extended till August 31. The striking drivers are demanding a further extension till December 31.

NEW DELHI, Sept 1: The Ola and Uber cab drivers on Tuesday went on an indefinite strike demanding extension of moratorium on loan repayments and a fare hike etc. They are also protesting against the 20 -30% commission which the cab aggregators are charging from drivers for each ride.

The strike by around two lakh drivers was a partial success in Delhi and NCR. The strikers claimed there was no cab service in Greater Noida, Dwarka and Uttam Nagar.

The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) had ordered a moratorium on repayment of loan instalments due during March 1, 2020 to May 31, 2020 period because of the coronavirus lockdown and subsequent loss of business. Later it was extended till August 31. The striking drivers are demanding a further extension till December 31 as normal traffic is yet to return and they don't get enough trips to make both ends meet.

As the cab companies' revenue dwindled during the coronavirus lockdown, Ola and Uber laid off a large number of employees in India.

Kamaljeet Singh Gill, vice-president of the Indian Federation for App- Based Transport Workers (IFAT), and president of Sarvodaya Drivers Association of Delhi, alleged that the aggregators are exploiting the drivers by deducting higher commission.

“Due to the acute financial crisis caused by lockdown, drivers are unable to pay their EMIs. The moratorium of loan repayment ended today and the banks are already putting pressure on us. Drivers are scared that banks will tow away their vehicles for not paying EMIs,” Gill said on Monday.
